Experiments

I experimented with card and paper to see what shapes I could make, but I wanted to experiment with other materials and think a little more into how or what about the item would be uncomfortable.

What is Wearable

I began to think about wear ability and whether what I would make would be wearable or not, I want the item to be able to be put on but not for it to be practical. I decided that personally feel that as long as you can put something on then it is wearable but not necessarily practical.

As Long As It Looks Good?

I began to think more about the idea that people, women in particular are willing to deal with or ignore pain (or be uncomfortable)  as long as what their wearing is; fashionable, individual or making some kind of a statement. I liked the idea of producing adornment that would be mildly uncomfortable and maybe a little impractical but could still be desirable.

Celebrities

Grace Jones

Nicki Minaj

Lady Gaga

I looked at celebrities that are known for wearing outlandish things that shock or to shock, where comfort and practicality aren't a factor. Although some of the things I have looked are extreme there are many everyday items women wear that are impractical and uncomfortable but are still worn on a frequent basis all in the name of fashion or looking good.

Catwalk

I also looked at accessories from the catwalk that were more exaggerated and maybe not meant to be 'wearable' for the masses or at least not for a long time.

Lately there is alot of footwear being made popular or infamous due to the amount of coverage they get, from heeled ballet pumps that could help ballet dancers stay on point to high heeled shoes without heels where the trick to keeping your balance is to work on your toes. The more I looked it appeared that discomfort was a major factor in alot of womens fashion trends and that no one seems to mind provided they look good. I liked the concept of trying to produce a piece of adornment that is uncomfortable due the fact it is angular unlike the female form or the fact its proportion is out.

Fashion and Trends

My first thought when I thought of uncomfortable or even painful fasion was the corset, due to all the problems it had caused women in the past breaking bones amongst other things. But when I thought a little harder I began to think of things women currently wear everyday that can be both uncomfortable and painful like; stillettos, large 'it' bags and waist belts but to name a few. It became apparent that there are many products currently on the market for women that are uncomfortable but are still widely popular.
